Short answer: CFU means colony-forming units, a measure used to estimate viable microorganisms capable of forming colonies under specified test conditions. A higher CFU number is not automatically better. Strain identity, evidence, serving, formulation and the point in shelf life all matter.
What a CFU number tells you
A CFU statement gives a quantity, but it does not by itself prove a benefit. Probiotic effects are linked to particular microorganisms and uses. The NIH probiotics fact sheet notes that higher CFU counts do not necessarily improve a product’s effects.
At manufacture or through expiry?
Live counts can change over time. Look for wording that makes clear whether the stated count applies when manufactured or is expected through the end of the labelled shelf life under the specified storage conditions. Those are not interchangeable claims.
Total blend or strain-by-strain?

Why “more” can mislead
A very large front-label number can distract from an unnamed strain, unclear serving, weak storage instructions or evidence unrelated to the finished product. Compare like with like and ask what amount was studied for the exact intended use.
